Current MBA student
I never imagined that a chat with a Cranfield alum would change my life. But after hearing their experience, I knew this was where I wanted to do my MBA.
As a Colombian professional with six years of experience across telecommunications, financial services, and EdTech, I was at a turning point in my career. I wanted to develop my leadership skills, broaden my global perspective, and push myself out of my comfort zone. Cranfield offered all of that, and more.
Why Cranfield’s Full-time MBA?
When researching MBA programmes, I looked for a practical, immersive experience - not just lectures and case studies. Cranfield stood out for several reasons:
- Hands-on learning: The curriculum is built around real-world application, with opportunities to work on live projects with UK and international companies. Through the ESCP international programme, I’ll also get the chance to gain experience abroad, in either Spain or Italy.
- Close-knit community: In comparison to larger business schools, Cranfield is better placed to offer a collaborative and supportive environment, where faculty, staff, and peers are always accessible. I have developed a close relationship with the Full-time MBA Course Director, Professor Leila Alinaghian, am fully supported by the careers team, my executive coach and the numerous faculty members who know us all by name.
- Global exposure: With students from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds, I’m constantly learning from different perspectives, an invaluable advantage whether I choose to stay in the UK or return to Latin America after graduation.
- A structured, personalised experience: Even before I applied, Cranfield hosted webinars, networking events, and Q&A sessions that made me feel welcomed and informed. The support didn’t stop once I arrived, it’s been a seamless transition into the MBA journey.
A journey of academic and professional growth
Five months in, I already feel transformed. The Leadership in Action module helped me reflect on my strengths and areas for growth, pushing me to become the kind of leader I aspire to be. Strategic Marketing has challenged me to think differently about customer engagement, and the Career Development & Enhancement sessions have given me the tools to map out my post-MBA path with confidence.
Beyond the academics, one of the most rewarding aspects has been collaborating with talented peers from different industries in our learning teams. The group projects (and WACs), discussions, and late-night brainstorming sessions have been as educational as the lectures themselves.
Planning and preparing as a Latin American student
If you’re considering studying abroad, I can’t stress enough the importance of planning ahead:
- Start your application early to ensure you meet all the requirements, especially for English language tests and UK visa applications.
- Explore scholarship options. I was fortunate to receive the Women in Leadership Scholarship, which has supported my MBA journey. Cranfield also offers a scholarship specifically for Latin American students, so make sure to research funding opportunities. .
- Connect with current students and alumni. Before applying, I reached out to Cranfield MBA students to hear about their experiences. Their insights were invaluable and helped me prepare for the transition. With a vast network of over 80,000 alumni from all regions and industries, contact the MBA team and they will endeavour to connect you with a suitable alum as part of a Buddy Scheme.
Balancing academic and social life
Coming back to an academic environment after years in the workforce was a challenge. At first, juggling coursework, networking events, and social activities felt overwhelming. But Cranfield’s structured approach - and the support of my classmates - made it manageable.
Beyond academics, there are plenty of ways to get involved. From sports clubs to student-led initiatives, I’ve found opportunities to unwind and connect with like-minded peers. The multicultural environment has made adapting easier, and I’ve enjoyed learning about British culture while sharing my own Latin American heritage with my classmates.
Looking ahead: An exciting future
One of the most exciting aspects of the Cranfield MBA is the upcoming ESCP international programme. In June, I’ll spend a month at either ESCP Madrid or Turin, specialising in FinTech, luxury management, innovation, or consulting. I’ll also work on a real-life consultancy project, gaining practical experience in my chosen field while expanding my international network. I’m looking forward to this prospect very much.
Final thoughts
Looking back, Cranfield has been more than just an MBA, it has been a journey of personal and professional growth. The friendships, the challenges, the late-night study sessions, and the breakthrough moments have all made this experience unforgettable.
