The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation awards up to 15 scholarships to Canadian doctoral candidates pursuing research related to one of its four founding themes, including environmental issues.

Who can apply

Eligibility Criteria:

1. You must be registered or accepted into a full-time doctoral program in year one or two.
 
2. Your field of study is broadly related to the humanities and social sciences or human sciences and is directly relevant to the future of Canada.
 
3. Your doctoral work must relate to at least one of the Foundation's four general themes: 
i. Human Rights and Dignity, 
ii. Responsible Citizenship, 
iii. Canada and the World, 
iv. People and their Natural Environment.
 
4. You must be a Canadian citizen studying at a Canadian or foreign institution. Or you are a permanent resident of Canada or a foreign national enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution.

Trudeau scholars are selected through a rigorous selection process that involves the following steps:

1. Evaluation of application files by a selection committee;
2. Invitation to semi-finalists for Round One group interviews
3. Invitation to finalist for Round Two individual interviews

 

Evaluation criteria:

  • Academic excellence,
  • Communication skills,
  • Public engagement,
  • Desire to contribute to public dialogue and transmit knowledge,
  • Desire to be involved in the community with other researchers or scholars,
  • Thematic relevance of the doctoral research.

How to apply

The foundation asks all applicants to apply directly via its application platform, and Universities are not required to nominate their candidates. The Foundation will review and assess all candidates who submit completed applications by the specified deadline. Applications typically open in September and close mid-November.
