The field of electro-optic and infrared (EO/IR) technology continues to progress rapidly. EO/IR systems are commonplace in both civil and military applications and as the technology matures their capability continues to grow and their cost begins to come down.

Course structure
A 5 day taught residential followed by independent study.What you will learn
On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Describe EO/IR systems and the underlying principles and technology,
- Analyse the significance of the EO/IR system in the defence context,
- Assess the performance of EO/IR systems.

- Simple radiometry and power calculations,
- Signature generation (solid and gaseous),
- Contrast,
- Atmospheric effects,
- Optical systems,
- Detector type (thermal, photon, one- and two-dimensional arrays, fibre sensors),
- Cooling requirements,
- Detector performance characteristics,
- Simple electronic processing,
- Display options,
- Electro-optic and infrared seeker systems,
- Countermeasures (including stealth) and counter-countermeasures,
- Digital image processing.
Upgrade to a professional qualification
When taken as a Short Course for Credit , 10 credit points can be put towards either the Sensors Electronic Warfare PgCert, Military Electronic Systems Engineering Foundations PgCert, Guided Weapon Systems MSc or Military Electronic Systems Engineering MSc.

Location and travel
Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) is a Cranfield School based at the Ministry of Defence establishment on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire borders.
Shrivenham itself lies in the picturesque Vale of the White Horse, close to the M4 motorway which links London and South Wales. It is 7 miles from Swindon, the nearest town, which lies off the M4 at the hub of Britain’s motorway network.
Bath, Cheltenham, Bristol and Oxford are all within an hour’s drive and London less than two hours away by car.
All visitors must be pre-booked in at reception by the person they are visiting on the campus.
