The aim of the C-IED Capability course is to educate and inform students, industry, military and civilian MoD C-IED and Counter Threat professionals in a system engineering & critical thinking approach to the Counter IED/Threat systems.

What you will learn

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Evaluate the benefit of C-IED activities (Predict, Pursue, Prevent, Detect, Neutralise and Mitigate and Exploit) with respect to Prepare the Force, Attack the Network and Defeat the Device,
  • Predict the impact of new technologies on threat,
  • Analyse the development of IED threats,
  • Recommend a strategy to counter an adversary’s IED/Threat systems.

Core content

Subjects covered will include:

  • The C-IED approach in accordance with JDP 3-65(AJP-3.15(C)) and other civilian and military approaches,
  • Understand the development of IED threats based on historical perspective and how these have been countered,
  • Technologies involved in C-IED across Detect, Neutralise, Mitigate and Exploit,
  • How to present information to senior and specialist staff on C-Threat,
  • The importance of ‘Understand’ and information management to maintain effectiveness,
  • Application of influence activities to C-Threat,
  • Analysing adversary IED/ threat systems and identifying points of influence and effect.

Upgrade to a professional qualification

This course will be taught at Masters standard as it is one of the modules that comprise the postgraduate Forensic Modular Masters Programme. Registering for this Short Course for Credit and successfully passing the associated assessment will gain you 10 Cranfield credits. These could then be used to apply for a transfer towards a PgCert/PgDip or MSc in the Forensic Programme should you wish to complete one of these courses within 5 years.

When taken as a Short Course for Credit, 10 credit points can be out towards the Explosives Ordnance Engineering MSc or any of the Master's belonging to the Forensics MSc Programme.

Who should attend

The Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Capability course is designed to provide military and civilian MOD staff and approved industry personnel with contextual knowledge on the development and use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and the tactics, techniques and procedures used to counter the threat they present.

The course is an introduction to the capability and is taken on a ‘standalone’ basis. As such, it is essential for those employed in a C-IED role or involved in the development and contracting for individual C-IED solutions, particularly project managers and their teams. The course is also relevant for other MOD staff such as Front Line Commands with responsibility for procurement support and sustainability as well as delivery of C-IED capability.

Students must have successfully completed the Introduction to Explosives Engineering course or have relevant experience in order to take this as a Short Course for Credit.
There are no prerequisites if taken as a Standalone Short Course.

Location and travel

Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) is a Cranfield School based at the Ministry of Defence establishment on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire borders.

Shrivenham itself lies in the picturesque Vale of the White Horse, close to the M4 motorway which links London and South Wales. It is 7 miles from Swindon, the nearest town, which lies off the M4 at the hub of Britain’s motorway network.

Bath, Cheltenham, Bristol and Oxford are all within an hour’s drive and London less than two hours away by car.

All visitors must be pre-booked in at reception by the person they are visiting on the campus.
