The aim of the FIEED course is to provide you with fundamental knowledge and core experience to investigate explosives/explosives devices and their illegal use in a criminal and terrorist context.

Course structure
One course per year. 5 days course. This course is delivered through lectures, laboratory classes, and field exposure to IED scenarios.What you will learn
On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Illustrate an understanding of the fundamental of explosives and explosive devices in an illegal context,
- Critically assess analytical data to identify explosive compounds,
- Construct and formulate arguments and analysis to effectively communicate relevant outcomes for targeted audiences.

- Introduction to the chemistry of explosives,
- Explosive Devices,
- Crime scenes investigation,
- Analytical techniques (Infrared, Raman, NMR, Mass spectrometry and
Chromatography) applied to the detection of explosives sampling techniques, - Case studies,
- Scenario based investigation of IEDs and their components.
Upgrade to a professional qualification
This short course will be taught at Masters standard as it is one of the modules that comprise the postgraduate Forensic Modular Masters Programme. Registering for this Short Course for Credit and successfully passing the associated assessment will gain you 10 Cranfield credits. These could then be used to apply for a transfer towards a PgCert/PgDip or MSc in the Forensic Programme should you wish to complete one of these courses within 5 years.
