Professor Angel Medina Vaya, Director of Environment and Agrifood at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, has joined an international expert group focused on food mycology, as a commission member.
The works with regulatory bodies on standards in food, with the aim of improving and standardising methods for identifying fungi in foods. It brings together leading international researchers at the forefront of this academic discipline.
Dr Jos Houbraken, Chair of the ICFM, commented: “We are very happy that Angel has become a commission member of the International Commission on Food Mycology (ICFM).
“Fungal spoilage imposes significant annual global revenue losses and can also lead to food safety issues due to the production of mycotoxins by these moulds. On the other hand, fungi have been used for centuries to ferment food and beverages, demonstrating their beneficial impact on human society.
“Angel’s research group at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ is among the leading groups in food mycology, and his contributions have had a large impact on the field.”
Professor Medina is also Director of the Magan Centre of Applied Mycology at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, a new research centre named in memory of the late Professor Naresh Magan, who was an eminent member of the ICFM and worked in food related mycology issues for more than 30 years.
Professor Medina Vaya said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the ICFM, and contribute to its important work in developing our understanding of food mycology. I hope to bring research and knowledge we are spearheading at Cranfield through the Magan Centre of Applied Mycology to the Commission, to increase our understanding of the issue of fungi contaminating our food.”
