Background
Dr Fadiji graduated with a BEng in Agricultural and Bioresources (Summa Cum Laude) from the Federal University of Technology (Minna, Nigeria). He obtained his MEng and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, conducting research under the DST-NRF South African Research Chairs Initiative Postharvest Technology Research Laboratory in the Africa Institute for Postharvest Technology (Stellenbosch University, South Africa). After obtaining his PhD, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stellenbosch University before joining the Postharvest & Agroprocessing Research Centre and Centre for Applied Data Science (University of Johannesburg, South Africa) where he coordinated the postharvest agriculture applied data science Flagship. Tobi joined the Plant Science Laboratory at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ in 2023 as Research Fellow in Postharvest Management.
Current activities
Tobi focuses on the activities developed in the Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold Chain (ACES) to deliver research and training activities. ACES accelerates sustainable cold chain solutions for food loss reduction and vaccine distribution.
Tobi's research interests focus on postharvest technology, food processing, food packaging technologies, drying technology, agricultural mechanization, innovative design, and numerical simulation and modelling of agricultural and packaging systems/processes. These interests encompass abroad class and explore themes around emerging technologies to reduce food losses, maintain quality, and add value to agricultural and horticultural products. Other fundamental research interests include data science/machine learning application in postharvest agriculture, nanotechnology, alternatives to plastics in exported fruit and vegetables, and the development and application of green postharvest treatments to reduce food losses. He publishes his work in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
Tobi contributes to teaching and supervision in the Agrifood MSc programme, with vast experience to inspire and equip students with the knowledge and skills required to tackle the complex challenges of feeding the world sustainably.
Tobi is a registered member of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the South African Institution of Agricultural Engineers (SAIAE). He is on the editorial board as a topic editor in Processes Journal under the Food Processes Section, a review editor in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems - Sustainable Food Processing, guest editor for Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, and a guest editor for Food Packaging and Shelf Life - Sustainable Fruit Packaging.
