Background

Dr. Parveen Fatemeh Rupani holds a PhD in Environmental Technology from the University of Sains Malaysia. Her Ph.D. thesis was on “Vermicomposting of palm oil mill wastes and it’s effect on earthworm biomass and plant growth. After her Ph.D, she traveled to different countries such as China and Belgium to further explore waste valorisation techniques. Dr. Rupani joined ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ in 2023 as a postdoctoral researcher. Her present research focuses on evaluating the efficacy of novel organo-mineral fertilizer (carbon-capture-based technology) applications to meet crop demands and sequester soil carbon.

Research opportunities

Dr. Rupani has several research interests in delving into strategies that can meet the Environmental Sustainability Goals of no2: Zero hunger, no7: clean energy, and no15: Life on land. She has several years of experience in vermicomposting technology, converting waste into fertilizer. She has an interest in assessing the quality of organic fertilizers that could meet the crop demand and be acceptable to the farmers, which could have less impact on GHG emissions. In addition, she is interested in exploring whether earthworms can remove contaminants and how their gut system helps eliminate complex compounds. Dr. Rupani has also conducted a number of experiments on utilising lignocellulosic substances. One of the technologies that she is interested in is anaerobic digestion and dark fermentation, which are used to switch to clean sources of energy.
